The demountable is a classic Australian building. As vernacular forms they are forgettable, ubiquitous and repeatable in the landscape.

This particular demountable church is one I pass on my way to Hill End in New South Wales standing in the forgotten town of Sallys Flat. I have been drawing and painting it for years now.

This church floats in space; it is heated, still and reserved. The image’s pictorial value is fittingly iconic for such an Australian classic. Often in abandoned Australian ghost towns the church is the last building standing.
